Sean got into geology to learn more about the natural world and to explore it. Since, geology has continued to surprise him with its diversity as he undertook a research internship focused on martian meteorites in summer 2017. Recently he has taken a keen interest in renewable energy potential in the East African Rift valley so the research opportunity in Uganda was almost too good to be true. Sean has travelled extensively and sees geologic research as a gateway to the world. Having enjoyed fieldwork in Scotland it is time for him to apply his skills further afield!

Sean’s task will be that of treasurer – a role he has performed before for other expeditions and organisations including an aid trip and as treasurer of the Glasgow University Weightlifting Club. Sean is sure that his previous experience will come in handy when the team are put to the test hitting fundraising targets!

The proposed expedition is both an opportunity for geologic research, social outreach and skill development for all parties involved – including students from the Makerere University in Kampala. This international collaboration within science should be encouraged at every opportunity and it is very exciting to be at the heart of it.

For Sean, this expedition is an opportunity for exploring potential career options in Africa as well as applying and refining his skills in fieldwork with a tight-knit team.
