Collaboration with Makerere University

Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, has a long standing relationship with Glasgow University. Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses.

The GU Uganda Expedition will interact with staff and students from the Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies and the School of Education at the campus in Kampala. We are also planning to join a Makerere Geology field trip to the Gayaza area, 30km south of Mbarara in Uganda. Before arriving in Uganda we will develop a geological field and structure guide for Glasgow and Ugandan students to be used in the field during mapping. This guide will be developed together with Makerere structural lecturer Kevin Aaynu and will be based on student experience. We plan to launch and test the guide during our joint field trip in Uganda.
