Having always been fond of the outdoors, Ross has a desire to explore the world, travelling as far as North America, Southeast Asia, and the north of the African continent. Since a young age he has always been fascinated by the natural environment – whether it be dinosaurs, mountain ranges or volcanoes. Having studied an Open University course in Polar environmental science, and a geographical study of an oil pipeline in western Canada in his final year at high school, it only made sense that his next step was to study for a degree in Earth Science at university.

Ross will prove a valuable addition to the team, having experience with geological research in the harsh environments of Spain, looking at geothermal energy development. In addition, he has mentored and educated high school pupils about camp craft and outdoor skills during his Duke of Edinburgh’s Leadership Award. He also has experience with leadership and teamwork skills through the Gold DofE Award, by hiking throughout rural Scotland, and by organising district charity events and competitive sports days through his local Scout unit.

His role for the Uganda Expedition will be of Secretary – a job which is of vital importance for any expedition’s success – and involves the organising of events, relaying of accurate information and correspondence with the relevant parties concerned with the Expedition’s interests. Ross’ prior outreach experience with the Glasgow University Earth Science Society, which entailed correspondence with industry contacts and organising educational sessions, makes him a perfect fit for the role.

Being a penultimate year student, Ross hopes that he will learn imperative techniques about geological mapping, which he can apply to his upcoming summer mapping project. He is enthusiastic about the prospect of contributing to a real scientific goal, being given the chance to experience new cultures, and help people learn the value of education in an evolving world
