Research Goals

Main Goals:

  • Produce a detailed field guide based on structural geology mapping which will be tested in conjunction with Ugandan students during their university mapping trip, with the further aim of distributing this guide to Glasgow students for their own mapping projects

  • Conduct geological mapping of unconformity, examining weathering and fracture state of basement rocks and how this will influence the potential for these rocks to hold both water and petroleum resources

  • Particular attention shall be made to the mineralisation which is associated with faulting. There has been mining in the area for both copper and cobalt by an international mining corporation, that we shall research in regards to the social implications, in particular hazards of waste management and civil unrest

  • Tourism is particularly important in Uganda, in particular to geothermal hot springs, which attracts many local school excursions. Tourism has influences on both local communities and nearby wildlife, which we will observe as part of our research

  • Following the geological mapping of localities, the information gained from these areas will be used to understand the social impacts that geological features have on the surrounding communities. This will include the use of the geothermal locations as an educational and economic resource, the quality and availability of water for local use, and the level of sustainable development in the area and its effects in regards to external investment surrounding viable geological sources
