Katie is in her first year of BSc Earth Science (Hons) degree, as well as studying Chemistry and Exploring the Cosmos. As someone who is deeply interested in geology, she thought the Uganda expedition would be the perfect opportunity to explore the field to gain a deeper knowledge of it while also gaining valuable experiences and memories.

She has previous experience of traveling to different countries and climbing European volcanoes such as Mount Etna, Vesuvius and Stromboli in Italy. The four hour trek up Stromboli was very physically challenging which helped her gain experience in hill walking and trekking up steep slopes.

She has further experience in hill walking by taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh expedition which was also physically and mentally challenging due to the large distance of the walk and the mapping skills needed to navigate the group through many different areas along with the patience and communication skills required to get the group safely through the task.

The social media role will allow her to inform other members of the expedition and anyone else following the social media pages of the exciting things they will get up to in Uganda, share information about the amazing location of the expedition and interesting aspects of the trip.

Katie is very excited and grateful to be given this amazing opportunity to gain a deeper set of skills and knowledge in the field of geology (which she hopes to pursue in the future) while contributing to a research investigation that is relevant at the moment and will be more so in the future. She is also animated about experiencing a brand new culture, meeting new people and making new memories which will last a lifetime.
